17/01/2007 - Cooker Warranty News: Dog turns on cooker and starts house fire - Domestic & General
An energetic cross-collie dog inadvertently knocked the switch on an electric cooker, turning it on and starting a house fire, in North Road, Selsey, in Portsmouth.

Flammable material which had been resting on the cooker caught fire and the house's owner came back to find her kitchen in flames, reports the Portsmouth News.

Firefighters arrived in time to save the woman's cat, which was found hiding behind a couch, and put out the fire, however the kitchen was gutted.

Roger Wood, head of community fire safety at West Sussex fire and rescue, told the paper: "The elderly lady didn't often use her cooker and had put various items on top of the rings.
"Although the cooker controls were off, the appliance was still switched on from the main supply. The inquisitive dog had simply jumped up as dogs so often do."

The lady who lived in the house said that she only ever used the microwave, never the cooker.
