Home > Get sharp with HD TV

British viewers will be able to access high definition TV channels through Freeview from 2009 it was announced earlier this month. But according to a recent survey conducted by Ofcom (the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries), the UK remains confused about what HD TV actually is. If you are one of those wondering what all the fuss is about, read our quick and easy guide below to getting into HD without the headache:
What is HD TV?
High Definition TV allows you to watch programmes with up to four times the screen resolution (number of pixels) of standard broadcasts. The picture quality is noticeably sharper, which can really make a difference to viewing movies, sports or nature programmes.
How can I get it?
You will need both an 'HD Ready' television set and an HD TV set-top box to receive channels. Full HD services are available through a subscription service with Sky or Virgin, while Freesat provides limited HD services when you pay a one-off fee for the set-top box.
Can I watch my DVDs in high definition?
Although normal DVD players will work with HD TV sets, to see any picture improvement film fans will need to purchase a new player as well as new discs. Currently it appears that Blu-ray is the format most people are plumping for and ‘HD DVD’ products look set to become the "Betamax" of the digital age (for those of us who remember the home video "wars" of the 1980s).
What should I buy?
It’s worth visiting a reputable store for TV demonstrations and advice. Look for a high screen resolution (minimum requirements for a TV to be called HD Ready are 720p and 1080i) and at least two HDMI inputs. These are the sockets into which you’ll plug your HD sources (eg. Virgin or Sky leads, or a Blu-ray DVD player) so for future flexibility you’ll probably need more than one. Look for the HD Ready logo to ensure you’re buying an authentic HD-capable model.
