Do you need help going digital?

The digital switchover is now underway in the UK, with Whitehaven in Cumbria becoming the first area to complete the switch last November.  By 2012 the whole of the UK is expected to be fully digital, which will allow a greater number of people to watch a greater number of channels.

Although many homes in the UK already receive some digital services (Freeview, cable or satellite), many people still have old equipment that needs to be converted or replaced before switchover happens, or they will no longer be able to watch TV.

Information on what to do will be sent to every household in advance of the switchover happening in their local area, but Digital UK, the independent body co-ordinating the switchover, can provide help now, and might even be able to offer you subsidised or free equipment and installation.

The Digital Switchover Help Scheme can assist those aged over 75 or with a significant disability or who are registered blind or partially sighted.  The scheme offers the help and equipment necessary to convert analogue television to digital.  There is a one-off, subsidised fee of £40.  For eligible households on certain income-related benefits, the help is free.
