Energy saving is big news at the moment, as fuel prices soar and the weather turns colder.
To make sure you’re not wasting any more fuel (or cash!) than necessary, read our top tips on saving energy in the home:
- Use energy saving lightbulbs
An energy saving lightbulb uses up to 80% less energy than a standard one and lasts around ten times longer too, according to the Energy Saving Trust. A range of shapes and designs are available and ‘soft tone’ technology means that new energy saving bulbs emit a warmer light than old ones did.
-
Choose energy efficient home appliances
Where possible, choose electrical products that are rated A+ or A for energy efficiency. Throwing away a broken appliance instead of having it fixed is also bad news for the environment – budget for repairs instead with a plan from Domestic & General.
- Install a condensing boiler
Read our feature ‘Is your boiler ready for retirement?’ to learn about upgrading to a more energy efficient model! Keeping your boiler clean and well-maintained with an annual service could also help it run more efficiently and save you money into the bargain. You can have one plus a year’s boiler protection with a HeatGuard plan from Domestic & General.
-
Maximise the output of your radiators
Fit reflective insulation panels behind your radiators to avoid heat being lost through the walls behind it. You should also ensure that your radiators aren’t covered over by furniture or curtains as this will prevent the heat from circulating properly. Finally, ensure your radiators are working effectively by bleeding them if they seem hotter at the bottom than at the top.
- Fit a new hot water cylinder jacket
If the insulating jacket on your hot water cylinder is looking a bit threadbare, or if it doesn’t fit properly, you can buy a replacement at a DIY store for just a few pounds. Some people even use two for added warmth! Make sure you choose a British Standard Kitemarked jacket.
- Improve the insulation in your home
Make sure your home is adequately insulated in the loft, the walls and the floors to prevent heat escaping. You could qualify for a grant to have this done: contact your local Energy Saving Trust advice centre free on 0800 512 012 to find out if you are eligible. You might also consider fitting double glazing in your windows – not only does this help keep the heat in, it also keeps external noise out!
And here are six quick ones you can put into action today!
-
Turn appliances off when you’re not using them – appliances left on standby account for a staggering 8% of the UK’s total electricity consumption!
-
Only boil the water you need to make a cup of tea.
-
Wash clothes at 30ºC instead of 40ºC – this will use 40% less electricity.
-
Close the curtains to keep the warmth in and use draft excluders by the front and back doors.
-
Lower your thermostat a degree or two.
-
Wear an extra layer indoors instead of turning the heating up!
