By now you have probably heard about the digital switchover, which is changing the way TV is broadcast in the UK. Here’s our guide to what it’s all about and what it will mean for you.
UK television is currently broadcast by both analogue (traditional aerials) and digital transmission (eg. most cable, satellite and freeview services). When the digital switchover happens, analogue transmission will stop. Airwaves can then be freed up to boost digital signals that will reach more people, and to offer new innovations such as mobile and high definition TV.
Yes! Over 80% of UK homes already receive some digital services, but you will need to purchase additional equipment to convert each non-digital television set.
Roll-out began in Whitehaven in Cumbria in October 2007 and will proceed region by region until the final analogue switch-off happens in 2012.
For full details on when the digital switchover is happening in your area and what new equipment you may need, visit www.digitaluk.co.uk or look out for the information leaflets which are being distributed to every household in the UK.
