Expert issues warning against online requests

The rise of social networking sites has brought some innovative new ways to obtain personal data with it, one expert has warned.

According to a spokesman for ESET, a company which specialises in providing a range of PC and laptop security solutions, people should use extra caution when accessing Facebook, MySpace and Twitter accounts.

Randy Abrams, director of technical education at the company, said the threat of spyware or malware is always present, but advised surfers to also be on the look out for innovative crooks.

He said when looking at the pages and updates of friends and colleagues, any "urgent plea for help" should be taken with a pinch of salt, as this could be an indication an account has been compromised.

"If you needed help immediately, would you really put it up on your Facebook page or would you be doing something else to obtain assistance?" he asked.
