Guide to choosing a new computer

Netbook, laptop, or desktop?  With new technologies coming on the market all the time, deciding what computer is right for you can be confusing.

If you’re looking to upgrade, make sure you read our tips first, courtesy of the experts at PC Guru.

Where do you want to use your computer?
You might like the look of a laptop, but if you only need to use your computer in your home office, then a traditional desktop PC might suit you better.  The advantages of desktops are that they are usually more powerful than a laptop of the same price, plus they are relatively straightforward to upgrade and fix since the base unit is easy to open up.

What’s more, the latest generation of desktop PCs are generally smaller and better looking than the old-fashioned ‘tower’ type, plus if you want a bigger screen or better speakers, it’s simple to plug in new ones.

What do you need from your computer?
If you’ve decided that you definitely need a portable computer – whether for space reasons or to give you flexibility over where you work – then a laptop is for you.  Laptops come in a variety of looks and price ranges, and you need to make sure you choose one that is powerful enough for your needs now, and in the future.

When you are shopping for a laptop, it is always better to see the laptop in person rather than ‘buying blind’ online.  Check the look and feel of the laptop – does it seem durable?  Is the keyboard big enough for you?  Are you happy with the keypad controls or would you need to connect a separate mouse?

Questions to ask a shop assistant are: does it have the right amount of memory for your needs?  What is the battery life like?  Can you connect external devices like a printer or digital camera easily? A good retailer should be able to help you with these and any other questions you might have.

What do you intend to do with your computer?
If you want a laptop, but you think you will only use it for web surfing then you might consider buying a netbook (not to be confused with notebooks – another name for traditional larger laptops).  Netbooks are very small and lightweight laptops, which are typically a lot cheaper than laptops.  They are great for using on the go as they can fit into your handbag or rucksack.  They also make great laptops for children, due to their size.

If you want to watch films, store a lot of music, films, photographs or other files, or if you need an internal DVD writer, however, you would probably be better off with a traditional laptop.
