Home > Thousand pound spider terrorises family

When Alan Woolley from Nottingham received his ten year bonus from the fire service, he couldn’t wait to treat himself, his wife Angela, and their three children to a stunning £1,000 40” Samsung TV.
“We were absolutely thrilled with it and it was Alan’s pride and joy,” reports Angela. “But as we have three very young children, I insisted that we took out a repair protection plan.” Little did she realise that it wouldn’t be the kids she’d have to watch out for but rather an unexpected eight-legged guest…
“When I first saw the size of the spider I just could not believe it,” she says. “I am really scared of small ones, never mind one the size of a tea-plate!” Resourceful Angela first tried to chase the spider away with a catalogue, “But it just sank into the carpet.” So she grabbed the next thing to hand – a giant pasting brush awaiting a spot of DIY in the conservatory.

Unfortunately for the new television, however, Angela brandished the brush a bit too enthusiastically. “The top flew off, sailed over the spider, and hit the television screen with a resounding bang.” The spider had scarpered, but what about the Samsung?
“We did not realise the damage until we switched it on and saw a series of cracks across the screen. My oldest son, Ben, was aghast and was convinced his dad would think he had done it,” Angela explains.
“Alan said he knew something was wrong when he walked in and the television wasn’t switched on! I owned up straight away but, for a lovely tolerant man, he was not best pleased.” Alan soon cheered up however, when he realised that the breakdown plan his wife had taken out included damage caused by accidents.
“We could get a replacement courtesty of Domestic & General,” explains Angela. “A repair protection plan has to be one of the better investments we’ve made.”
